I promised a treat. Here are the opening pages of book 1, In Death's Wake. Anybody who is curious but hasn't jumped into Gabriel's world yet, here is a taste...

How did he get here? Gabriel tried to replay the events of the past few weeks in his aching head, but it all seemed like a hellacious blur. If somebody had asked him a few weeks ago where he would be at this point in his year, he would have said failing his new year’s resolution, or trying to burn off holiday weight. You know…something mundane and boring. He would have never, in a million years, said he would be laying in the rain bleeding to death on some no name rooftop in the middle of the night. Nobody would ever find him if he died up on top of this industrial building, which looked like the other dozen or more in this large sprawling city.

Despite the downpour he could see the movement closing in as it came towards him. Helpless and bleeding he dragged himself to the edge, the only way out was down. I guess in a way he knew it would end here just like this, doing what he does. He heard it before he saw it, the click of the bullet moving into the chamber. Struggle as he might to get to his feet it was no use, the bright flash made him see transparent dots that floated in and out of his vision. The shot rang out, making his ears ring in a way that reminded him faintly of the school bell signaling his release from the cold hard walls of the building and his imminent trip home…
